Obstruction of justice is a serious federal offense that generally involves intentionally interfering with the administration of law. Federal statutes prohibit actions that impede federal officers from carrying out their lawful duties. In theory, this could include directing state resources to block arrests, withholding critical information, or physically preventing federal agents from conducting operations.

Proponents of obstruction charges argue that when governors enact policies designed specifically to frustrate ICE enforcement—such as banning cooperation by state law enforcement or ordering agencies to refuse federal detainer requests—they may be intentionally hindering federal officers. From this perspective, the intent behind such policies matters.
