Grady Demond Wilson was born on October 13, 1946, in Valdosta, Georgia, and grew up in New York City. He showed an early interest in the performing arts — including dance and theatre — appearing on Broadway as a child and working at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater.

Before becoming an actor, Wilson served his country. He joined the U.S. Army, served in the Vietnam War, and was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in action. This early experience shaped his worldview and work ethic.
