The first engine arrived within fifteen minutes.
A low rumble cut through the quiet, drawing Sophie’s attention before she even realized what she was hearing. A single motorcycle pulled into the parking lot, chrome catching the sunlight, its rider removing his helmet as he approached with an easy confidence that didn’t feel intrusive.
He stopped a few feet from Sophie and knelt down, bringing himself to her level.
“Happy birthday,” he said, his voice warm and steady. “Heard there was supposed to be a party. Thought you might need a few guests.”
