Names echoed through speakers one after another, applause rising and falling rhythmically. Students crossed the stage smiling, shaking hands, collecting diplomas that symbolized far more than paper.
Everything unfolded exactly as planned.
Until Lena’s name was called.
“Lena Alvarez.”
Cheers burst through the auditorium. Miguel stood immediately, shouting her name louder than anyone else. Lena walked forward, heart pounding, smiling through tears she hadn’t expected.
Principal Harold Benton handed her the diploma case.
Flash.
Applause.
Relief.
For a brief second, the world felt perfectly aligned.
And then the back doors opened.
The sound was small—barely noticeable—but a draft swept down the aisle like a warning no one understood yet.
