Breakthrough: Sanford and Son

Wilson’s big break came in 1972 when he was cast as Lamont Sanford on NBC’s hit sitcom Sanford and Son. The show was an American adaptation of the British series Steptoe and Son.

Lamont Sanford was the calm, responsible, and often morally grounded son of the loud, scheming junk dealer Fred G. Sanford, played by Redd Foxx. Wilson’s performance was essential to the show’s success—he played the perfect counterbalance to Foxx’s explosive humor.

The chemistry between Wilson and Foxx became legendary. Their on-screen arguments, heartfelt moments, and comedic timing helped make Sanford and Son one of the most influential sitcoms of the 1970s and a landmark in Black television history. Continue reading…
